Louis QHALLOWED GROUND
I was extremely excited, proud, surprised and humbled this past February when I received what I initially regarded as potential SPAM in my email account from a Jeff Griffith/Creative Editor for Men’s Health magazine. The email referenced interest in one of my Gettysburg shots from a photo adventure last fall. Specifically, the photo of the 155th Pennsylvania Monument shot from Little Round Top. Mr. Griffith had explained that he was quite a Civil War buff and did some editorial and layout work for the Gettysburg Trust and their Hallowed Ground Magazine and searched numerous photos before stumbling (luckily for me) upon the image online. Long story short, after several months of emails and editing, we agreed on two shots that would be used for the magazine due to be published by the July 2013 ~ 150th anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg. The 155th Pennsylvania Monument shot was to be the cover spread for this historically significant publication while the shot of the interior of the 12th & 44th New York Regiment Monument overlooking Devil’s Den would be used for the interior table of contents page. I have had the honor of having several of my photos published over the last few years, most notably, Applebees Restaurant Chain aquired several of my Elmira Jackals and Elmira landmark photos when they redesigned the Elmira, NY restaurant in 2011; and Top Plant Engineering Magazine, in 2012, used several of my photos to highlight new equipment and fiscal awards. I have recently had two of my more fun and creative shots published in iPhone Life Magazine with the Chemung River sunset shot taking third place in the July/August 2013 issue. Who knew iPhone art would become such a booming and fun medium and outlet that is available for millions of iPhone and App users !!
Since the Gettysburg publication, I am excited to share that along with my new “re-branding” of Louis Q Photography, things have begun to pick up greatly with my photography work. My “likes” are steadily gaining on Facebook and many of my old fans are accepting the change. Probably some better than me !!
I have been recently contacted by the “Lost Bird Project” of NYC and have entered into licensing agreement for one of my photos to be featured in their 2014 book based on the sculptures of Todd McGrain that memorializes five extinct North American birds including the Labrador Duck that was last seen in Elmira, NY. and has connections to Mark Twain’s writings on the Mississippi.
2013 has been an exciting year for me so far. I have rebranded myself as well as my image and focus. I have begun gearing up for shows and galleries for 2014 and am building quite the inventory of fine art prints on metal, canvas and matted prints. I have chosen to focus primarily on my main love of “ruinscape”/abandoned ~ landscape and portraiture as well as media photography. I am in the process of holding a fine art auction this fall for a cancer fundraiser and am looking into starting a local photography club for amateurs and pros alike to get together and have fun discussing all things photography. I have limited the amount of family/wedding photography to just a handful a year focusing solely on very creative and unique shoots. Having said that, I recently shot two amazing weddings, one in Atlantic City, NJ and the other just outside of Ithaca, NY where I and my fellow photog friends were granted 100% creativity and control over our shots. Although wedding and family photography is not necessarily my ” new thing” or primary focus, I am willing to sit down with any potential client and discuss all options.
With literally dozens of wonderful and talented photographers popping up on a weekly basis offering basically the same thing, I have chosen to focus on my unique style, creativity and vision of “ruinscape ~ landscape and portraiture” and editing styles rather than being just another guy in town that takes pictures. I want to be different.
I truly want to thank Jeff Griffith from Men’s Health for his interest in my photography and helping kickstart what I hope is a great photographic journey and successful career. I also want to thank all of my family and friends for continuing to have faith in me and my work even when I doubt myself at times and feel like being just another guy with a camera who needs to compete.. I realized with all the changes this year most importantly of all, I DON’T need to compete. I need to be myself. Focus. Have fun. Relax. Enjoy Life. Period.
